Follow Friday – Ladylike Delicacy

by Cameron Miquelon on 22 June 2012 · 6 comments

Remember when I had my very first bilingual Follow Friday a couple of weeks ago? I figured it was such an awesome idea that I decided to do it again.

Follow Friday

Sara of Ladylike Delicacy is a Finnish blogger who has been described as a “modern girl” with “old world charm,” bringing her love of vintage into the 21st Century. Make the jump to learn more about her love of vintage, as well as the reasons behind her blog’s (very) recent name change, what Finnish fashion is like, and what you should expect should decide to head up to Finland. As always, my questions are in English while the original answers are in her native tongue, and the English translations are italicized/colour-coded for your convenience.

Sara of Ladylike Delicacy showing us how it’s done in the world of vintage.

Name: Sara

Name of Blog: Ladylike Delicacy

Date of Founding: 8. lokakuuta 2009 / 8 October 2009

A Short Description of Your Blog: Tyyliblogi, joka sisältää vintagea, kirpputorilöytöjä, romantiikkaa ja höpsöä Irlannin ihannointia. / A style blog that includes vintage, thrifting finds, romanticism, and silly admiring of Ireland.

How did you find your way into fashion blogging?

Sara: Olin selaillut muutamia tyyliblogeja jo ennestään ja halusin muutenkin paikan jossa jakaa ajatuksiani, inspiraatioitani ja elokuva-arvioitani. Ajan myötä blogini kuitenkin muuttui enemmän vintagetyyliini keskittyväksi, joten muut kirjoitukset jäivät vähemmälle.

I had browsed some other style blogs before I started my own, and I wanted to find a place where I’d share my thoughts, inspirations and movie reviews. Over time, my blog began to concentrate more on my vintage-inspired style, so I wrote less about other stuff.

What is the story behind the name of your blog?

First my blog was called Autumn, Coffee and Inspiration, but then I changed it on 8 June 2012. Ladylike Delicacy described my blog much more, and after my life changed a lot, I wanted it to be seen in my blog, too. The new name describes me and my style, I love to be feminine and I am a bit overly sensitive too. Also, in my opinion “Ladylike” and “Delicacy” are two the most beautiful words in the world!

You describe yourself as a “modern girl” with “old world charm.” What do those two phrases mean to you, and how do they show through in your blog?

Erotun ainakin katukuvasta. Rakastan myös antiikkisia huonekaluja ja esineitä!

My good friend Bella of The Citizen Rosebud invented the slogan for me, and those phrases describe me well. My lifestyle is as modern as any other 20-year-old girl’s, but I mix a lot of old and new, yet my look stays old-fashioned. I stand out from the crowd. I also love antiques!

When one thinks of fashion, Finland is not usually what comes to mind. How would you describe your country’s overall style, and how does your style compare/contrast to the overall picture?

Sara: Ensiksi tulee mieleen ainakin Marimekko, Ivana Helsinki ja Minna Parikka. Suomalaisten tyyli on mielestäni yleisesti ottaen aika yksinkertainen ja väritön, halpaketjuvaatteita (esim. H&M) näkyy paljon katukuvassa. Itse en niinkään perusta trendeistä, mieluummin panostan klassiseen ja naiselliseen tyyliin.

The first design labels that come to my mind are Marimekko, Ivana Helsinki and Minna Parikka. I think that Finnish style is typically quite simple and colourless. Lots of cheap chain store clothings (H&M for example) are seen in the street view. I myself don’t care about trends; instead, I like to go for feminine and classic style.

If any of my readers were to visit Finland, what should my readers know about your country in regards to cultural norms and behaviour, and what would you recommend as far as places to visit, lodging, transit, dining, shopping et al?

First of all, here lives no polar bears, and we don’t live in igloos. :D It’s freeeeezing in winter but summers are warm.

Finns are quite shy at first, but that doesn’t mean we are impolite. Finns are good when it comes to drinking alcohol.

I would say that foreigners should try sauna and winter swimming.

Places to visit would be Lapland (northern part of Finland), nature, and of course, our capital Helsinki. But tourists should know that Finland is quite an expensive country to visit.

Good traditional foods are, for example, Karelian pie, lanttukukko, rye bread and Karelian hotpot! And of course, Finnish sweets are something worth of trying, especially salmiakki (salty liquorice) and Karl Fazer’s chocolates.

What has been your favourite moment as a fashion blogger?

Sara: Kun lukijat kertovat, että inspiroin heitä. :)

When readers say to me that I give them inspiration. :)

Why do you blog?

I keep my blog as a diary, and I love to document my outfits. I have got lots of friends through blogging, and found people with the same spirit. It has been a wonderful journey!

What one piece of advice would you offer my readers regarding…

Style: Pukeudu vaatteisiin joista ITSE pidät. / Wear the clothes YOU like.

I recommend to write about things that interest you, so you won’t get bored. And that’s the way you find the people who are like you.

Life in general: Aina löytyy oikotie. :) / There’s always a shortcut. :)

Who is your blog for?

Sara: Kaikki ovat tervetulleita, jos vain kiinnostaa. :)

Everybody is welcome, if you’re interested. :)

Any final words?

Sara: Ole oma itsesi!

Be yourself and cheers!
